New Episode: The White-Glove Standard – Raising Your Game in Meetings and Presentations

We’ve just released Episode 2 of the Hargreaves Marketing Podcast — and this one is all about standards.

There’s an old story about a market leading confectionary firm in the 1980s. Sales managers were said to run a white glove across the inside of a rep’s car windscreen. Any trace of dirt, and the rep was in trouble.

True or not, the story highlights a vital lesson: when you hold yourself to higher standards, performance rises.

In this episode, I explore how applying a “white-glove standard” to your meetings, presentations, and events can make the difference between being forgettable and being trusted.

You’ll discover:
Why preparation is the hidden foundation of professionalism
How first impressions shape the room before you even start
The discipline needed to deliver with clarity and confidence
Why follow-up often decides whether opportunities move forward or stall

This isn’t about perfectionism — it’s about professionalism. And professionalism builds trust.

Listen now: Spotify link to Episode 2

Be ready when it matters most — and apply the white-glove test to your next big moment.

Launching the Hargreaves Marketing Podcast

I’m pleased to share that the first episode of the Hargreaves Marketing Podcast is now live. But rather than just say “out now,” I want to reflect on why I’ve started this series, and how it connects to what we do at Hargreaves Marketing.

Be Ready When It Matters Most

At Hargreaves Marketing, our focus is simple: helping driven sales, marketing and business professionals be ready when it matters most. That means:

Developing advanced business communication capabilities

Preparing for high-stakes meetings, presentations and events

Equipping professionals to solve problems, drive projects and win deals

The podcast will explore these themes in depth. Each episode is designed to offer fresh perspectives and practical insights to help SMEs and their people seize opportunities when they arise.

Making More of Opportunities

From a client’s perspective, the question is often not “Do we have opportunities?” but “Are we fully ready to make the most of them?”

Whether it’s a pitch, a client meeting, an industry event or an internal project presentation, the ability to communicate with clarity, confidence and purpose can make all the difference. This podcast aims to highlight those moments, and to encourage professionals and business owners alike to approach them with the right mindset and tools.

Why a Podcast?

On a personal note, I’ve always had a deep interest in business media. During my career, I worked for specialist media organisations and contributed extensively to in-house business magazines — back when most media was still print.

Now, I’m excited to be creating in the digital space: podcasts, videos, interview recordings and other formats that bring ideas to life in new ways. This isn’t just about producing content — it’s about providing practical, relevant support to business professionals who care about their careers, and SME leaders who want to invest wisely in developing their people.

Looking Ahead

The first episode looks at a common dilemma many SMEs face: the balance between accepting what is and striving for what could be. It’s a theme that sets the stage for the series to follow, where we’ll cover readiness, mindset, team development and commercial excellence.

You can listen to Episode 1 on Spotify here

This is just the beginning — and I look forward to sharing the journey with you.

“Is Your Business Talking to Your Market — or Just Adding to the Noise?” “Many companies could see a dramatic boost in productivity with clearer rules […]

“Is Your Business Talking to Your Market — or Just Adding to the Noise?”

“Many companies could see a dramatic boost in productivity with clearer rules for social media and a stronger market focus in their marketing content. Which raises a tough but necessary question: is your marketing content strategy, and your social media policy, fit for purpose?”

In the 1990s and early 2000s, business growth was built on direct conversations. Buyers and sellers spoke on the phone, discussed needs, and decided whether there was a fit. The exchange was clear, commercial, and focused on value.

Today, communication is noisier. On platforms like LinkedIn, it’s common to see businesses mixing political views, personal reflections, and trivial distractions alongside their professional messaging. The result? For potential customers, it’s hard to know what a company actually does, who it helps, and why it matters.

This creates two problems for SMEs:

Content confusion – your market can’t find clarity in your message.

Productivity drag – “professional social media” becomes a time sink that absorbs attention at every level of seniority.

The challenge is striking the right balance. Your market needs to hear from you — but what they need is focus, relevance, and insight into how you can help them solve problems or grow their own businesses.

The solution isn’t more content. It’s better content, grounded in your addressable market and supported by a social media policy that keeps your team on track.

Why Your Company Values Might Not Mean What You Think

When you look at company websites or “About Us” pages, you’ll often see the same words repeated: Integrity. Excellence. Innovation. Respect.
They sound good. They’re safe. They tick a box.

But here’s the problem: if every business is using the same handful of words, do they really mean anything?

The issue isn’t that these words are wrong. It’s that they’re often chosen from a limited “acceptable” vocabulary rather than built from what truly makes a business unique.

Where Many Businesses Go Wrong

Too often, companies decide their values by:

Brainstorming a list of nice-sounding words.

Crossing off ones that don’t fit.

Settling on what’s left.

The result? Generic values that could belong to any company in any industry.

A Better Way to Define Values

Instead of starting with words, start with behaviours. Ask:

What behaviours do we most value in our people?

How do we want to treat customers, suppliers, and partners?

What does “good” look like inside our business?

When you begin with behaviours, the words follow naturally. For example:

If you want employees to speak up when they see a problem, maybe your value is about Courage.

If you want to deliver on promises no matter what, maybe your value is about Reliability.

If you want to build long-term trust with suppliers, maybe your value is about Fairness.

Not Everyone Needs Advanced Communication Skills — But One Person Could Transform Your Business In most companies, very few people are interested in developing advanced communication […]

Not Everyone Needs Advanced Communication Skills — But One Person Could Transform Your Business

In most companies, very few people are interested in developing advanced communication skills. From experience, I’d say it’s around 1% — and research supports the idea that while many people recognise their skills need improvement, far fewer actually act on it. For example, more than half of professionals say their presentation skills need work, but only around 20% seek out training.

So yes, in any team, only a small number will push themselves to master the art of communicating clearly in meetings, presentations, and at events. And fewer still will keep pushing once the course is over, the slides are put away, and the day-to-day pressures take over.

But here’s the thing: sometimes one person is all it takes to make a difference.

Why investing in one person matters

For SMEs, the fear is often: “What if we train them and they leave?” But the evidence points the other way:

94% of employees say they would stay longer if their company invested in their training and development.

Companies with strong training programmes enjoy 218% higher income per employee than those without formalised programmes.

And staff are 45% more likely to stay in their role if they receive training.

In other words, training is not a ticket out — it’s one of the best ways to hold onto good people.

The two real drivers of growth

From my experience, two factors drive whether someone develops advanced communication skills:

Necessity. If your role demands high performance — whether that’s winning deals, solving problems in meetings, or leading projects — then communication becomes non-negotiable.

Environment. People don’t know what they don’t know. If you’re surrounded by colleagues who never push themselves, it’s hard to improve. But spend time with ambitious, driven people who value communication, and the standard rises for everyone.

That’s why the smartest SMEs deliberately create environments where people can learn, stretch, and be supported.

How SMEs can start small

You don’t need a big training budget. Instead, look around your business and pick just one person you believe in. It could be a young apprentice, a promising sales rep, or a marketer who shows initiative. Give them:

Access to a good course or mentor

The chance to practice in real settings (meetings, client calls, presentations)

Clear feedback and encouragement

When people feel their employer has invested in them, loyalty deepens. That investment often pays back in confidence, clearer communication, stronger client relationships — and ultimately better results for the business.

The ripple effect

Dynamic people who can articulate what matters most, when it matters most, can have a transformational impact on a company. Sometimes that transformation starts with just one person.

For SME leaders, the opportunity is simple: look around your company. Find someone with potential. Invest in them. Back them to grow. The return on that single decision can last for years.

Why Real Strategy Presentations Don’t Come From Templates

AI can help you prepare for big presentations. It can draft slides, structure a narrative, even suggest talking points. Useful, yes — but only up to a point.

The reality in business is that presentations to boards, customers or suppliers are never straightforward. There are unknowns, hidden agendas, personalities and people issues that no AI tool understands.

That’s why the glossy “hero’s journey” decks — the kind you can download off the shelf or generate in seconds — don’t work when it matters. They have their place at motivational staff events. But real strategy conversations don’t look like that.

Strategy isn’t one-size-fits-all

Every business faces unique pressures. Every boardroom has its own dynamics. Every customer has unspoken concerns. A templated presentation can’t handle that. And an AI voiceover with a generic American accent certainly can’t.

What works in the real world

Winning deals, driving projects and solving problems requires two things:

Advanced business analysis — to get to the heart of the issues.

Strong communication skills — to articulate strategy clearly and credibly.

In other words, people-savvy business professionals talking to other business professionals. Equal to equal.

The bottom line

AI is a tool. But it’s not the strategy, and it’s not the conversation. The art lies in blending experience, insight and communication to move things forward. That’s what decision-makers respect.

It’s tempting to think that because tools like ChatGPT can create a presentation in seconds, this is better—faster, cheaper, and “good enough.”

And in some cases, that’s true.

If you want a simple deck explaining the solar system, AI can pull together content far quicker (and probably more comprehensively) than a human could.

But business presentations live in a different world entirely.

This is the land of the unknowns.
The land of deeply held beliefs.
The land of self-interest and self-protection.

Google and ChatGPT don’t know what’s really happening inside your business. They haven’t heard the concerns of your customers on the road. They don’t know what’s coming around the corner in your market. But your people might—if you ask them.

When you commission a bespoke business presentation, you’re not just paying for a few slides. You’re investing in:

Hours of discovery, conversations, and critical thinking

Distilling complex situations into a clear, compelling story

Anticipating objections and preparing answers

Communicating in a way that drives action

The real value of a well-crafted business presentation isn’t in the slides themselves—it’s in the clarity, confidence, and decisions they help enable.

Generic, off-the-shelf decks might look polished. But they won’t win deals, move projects forward, or solve business-critical problems.

That’s what thoughtful, human-led business communication is for.

Why Articulation Must Come Before Eloquence in Business Communication

When it comes to communication in business, there are two qualities that often come up: being articulate and being eloquent. They sound similar, but they’re not the same. More importantly, the order in which you develop them makes all the difference to your credibility.

At Hargreaves Marketing, we believe articulation comes first — always. Here’s why.

Articulation: The Foundation

To be articulate is to communicate with clarity, structure, and accuracy. It’s about making sure your ideas are thought through, well-formed, and easily understood.

When you’re articulate, you can stand up to scrutiny. If someone challenges your reasoning, you have the clarity and evidence to back it up. That’s the essence of credibility.

Eloquence: The Amplifier

Eloquence, on the other hand, is about persuasion, style, and impact. It’s what gives your words rhythm and resonance. Eloquence is powerful — but only if it’s built on a solid base of clarity.

Eloquence without articulation is just gloss. It may impress in the moment, but it quickly crumbles under questioning.

Why It Matters in Business

In boardrooms, pitches, and client meetings, credibility is non-negotiable. When your ideas are articulate, people believe you. When you add eloquence on top of that, they’re not just convinced — they’re inspired.

That’s why at Hargreaves Marketing we help our clients articulate their strategy first, then elevate it with eloquence. The result? Messages that are clear, credible, and compelling.

Clarity is the foundation. Eloquence is the amplifier.
