Are you ready to answer difficult questions about your presentations?

Perhaps you anticipate an easy time but need to guard against complacency? Or perhaps you expect some very robust questions from difficult people? Either way there is no substitute for preparing well for the Q&A parts of your important presentations.

The thing is preparing on your own can be tough.

How do you talk to yourself and both ask and answer the questions?

Have you even worked out what the questions may be?

One thing for sure is that trying to think on your feet while under pressure during a presentation is a very risky approach.

Professionals prepare.

It doesn’t guarantee success but it improves your chances greatly.

Then success becomes a habit.

Building a reputation for doing business presentations well can become your ticket to bigger and better business deals, agreements for budget funding, massively improved personal credibility, and promotions to better jobs.

In short it is better to prepare for the question and answer (Q&A) part of your presentations with a coach who can plan and role play questions and answers with you.

Standard learning and development initiatives may be quicker and less costly but what if they are actually doing more harm than good?

In sales and marketing time is money. If you take people away from their jobs you want to be sure that their time isn’t wasted.

Professional people are usually busy. They don’t like being messed around. Ask them to give up their valuable time for something that doesn’t add value and you can expect a negative reaction.

But that is exactly what many leaders do. Too often do they pull salespeople off the road and marketing people away from urgent tasks for little benefit.

I can remember being asked to attend a sales meeting. It required a 5 hour drive which meant that I had to finish on my sales patch after lunch to drive to the hotel, stay overnight, and wait around until 10 am the next morning until the meeting started. After 20 minutes the meeting (about something that could instead have been communicated by phone and a PowerPoint) was over. Then I had to drive back. A journey that took even longer due to traffic. That was one and a half selling days lost. For a salesperson that is a long time. The sales targets don’t change, they just get harder to achieve.

Of course to some managers a story like that is like water off a duck’s back. It isn’t their time lost. They simply don’t care.

If you employ managers like that, or if you yourself are like that I would urge you to think differently.

Sales and marketing performance is often subjective. People can make the right or wrong choices about what to do. You need them to make the most of their time and have a positive frame of mind.

Which brings us back to standard learning and development (or “off the shelf”) compared to tailored learning initiatives.

Standard training is that where one course fits all and the person being trained needs to figure out how to apply what they have learned in their job. The sad reality is that many people find it very difficult to match up what has been taught with how to use it in their jobs.

Tailored learning is where everything that is being taught is directly related to what is important in the eyes of the directors, managers, and individual. Rather than a one-off training course, tailored learning is more coaching based over a period of weeks or longer. Instead of a one-way directive, it is an ongoing two-way discussion.

Add flexible, short and dynamic sessions by web meeting and you have a very different experience than the old classroom style approach.

So there are some of the differences.

In short if you want to “tick boxes” then choose the standard training. That way if anyone asks you can say you have done something. However if your remit is performance based and you need results, then seriously consider a tailored approach.

Why SME Owners Open Up More to Peer Groups Than to Their Own Teams — And Why It Matters Many SME owners share strategy with […]

Why SME Owners Open Up More to Peer Groups Than to Their Own Teams — And Why It Matters

Many SME owners share strategy with peers but not teams. Learn how a strategic narrative and presentation culture align and empower your business.

Peer-to-peer groups have become essential support networks for some SME owners. These meetings create space for honest conversations, difficult questions, and strategic reflection — often in a way owners feel they can’t achieve inside their own company.

But this leads to an interesting and rarely discussed pattern:

Many SME leaders are more open and vulnerable with relative strangers once a month than with the people they work with every day.

This dynamic raises a critical question:

Why is it so difficult to be open internally, and what is the cost of that gap?

1. Why Leaders Feel Safer Being Honest With Strangers

On the surface, it seems counterintuitive. Surely being open with your own leadership team should feel more natural than speaking candidly with people you barely know?

Psychology explains why:

No hierarchy, no consequences: Inside the business, the owner is the authority. Being uncertain feels risky. External peers are equals — nobody reports to anyone, so honesty feels safe.

No long memory: Employees remember. Peer groups mostly forget.

No pressure to maintain the “leader identity”: Leaders can be human externally; internally, they are expected to always be confident.

No risk of destabilising the team: Sharing uncertainty internally may feel like undermining confidence.

When leaders are candid externally but guarded internally, their teams often receive only a partial view of strategy. This leads to:

Why Some SME Owners Avoid a Strategy Documentation-Based Culture — And Why It Holds Their Business Back

In many SMEs, strategy documentation is rare, inconsistent, or avoided altogether. On the surface, the reasons sound practical:

“We’re too busy.”

“We communicate informally.”

“Everyone already knows what they need to do.”

“We don’t want unnecessary meetings.”

But scratch beneath the surface and a deeper pattern emerges — one that few leaders openly acknowledge but many privately feel:

Documenting strategy feels risky. Because once the strategy is written, presented, and shared — it becomes something you can be wrong about.

This is a perfectly understandable human reaction. But it is also one of the most common and most damaging blind spots in SME leadership.

In this article, we explore why this happens, why it matters, and what to do about it.

1. Why Documentation Can Feel Dangerous to SME Owners

Many SME founders built their companies through instinct, improvisation, and personal credibility. Decisions were made quickly. Strategy lived in their heads. The business moved fast because the leader moved fast.

A structured internal presentation culture — especially one that documents evolving strategy — changes the dynamic.

Documentation introduces:

Consistency

For some owners, this triggers an understandable fear:

When everything stays verbal and informal, memory is flexible.

Hargreaves branding has changed from the original Hargreaves Marketing design of 2012 to better reflect the work we have offered for some time now.

In the very early days the emphasis was on helping quite small businesses with their digital marketing. However as time went by and we started working with larger companies who had in-house sales and marketing people our work changed dramatically. We started to get involved in all sorts of strategic projects including technology, recruitment, onboarding, training, strategic thinking and strategy execution.

The business evolved further after COVID with an emphasis on developing support packages to enable business owners, managers, and sales and marketing professionals within SME companies to ‘articulate strategy well’ verbally, visually and in writing.

We continue to specialise in this area and now narrow down even more by offering internal presentations coaching for driven business owners running growth-focused companies and their sales and marketing colleagues.

To discuss how we might work together to solve problems, drive projects and win more and better deals, please contact Adrian Hargreaves direct on 07866795858 or email: adrian@hargreaves-marketing.co.uk

What Does ‘Good’ Really Look Like in Business?

Last week, I launched a new podcast series with a simple but important purpose: to explore the difference between average performance and commercial excellence.

The inspiration comes from my own experience of working with very different organisations. On one hand, I’ve seen businesses that operated to high standards, lived their values, and consistently achieved incredible results. On the other, I’ve worked with firms that undermined themselves through politics, poor leadership, or by settling for “good enough.”

What I came to realise is that many leaders and managers don’t actually know what “good” looks like. Not because they aren’t capable, but because they’ve never been exposed to it. Without that benchmark, companies often allow circumstances, personalities, or short-term pressures to dictate the direction of the business.

This challenge is particularly relevant for SMEs. As they grow, they enter new territory and face new demands. Without clarity on what “good” looks like, they can unintentionally accept lower standards, weaker performance, and cultures that hold them back.

The purpose of my podcast is to challenge that way of thinking. Meetings, presentations, and key events aren’t just everyday activities — they’re opportunities to set higher standards, bring values to life, and show what excellence can look like in practice.

So far:

Episode 1 was about aspiration.

Episode 2 was about high standards.

Future episodes will dig deeper into practical examples of what good looks like — and how leaders can use everyday situations as a platform for excellence.

My hope is that this series sparks reflection and inspires leaders to ask: Are we really setting the bar high enough? And if not, what would commercial excellence look like for us?

New Episode: The White-Glove Standard – Raising Your Game in Meetings and Presentations

We’ve just released Episode 2 of the Hargreaves Marketing Podcast — and this one is all about standards.

There’s an old story about a market leading confectionary firm in the 1980s. Sales managers were said to run a white glove across the inside of a rep’s car windscreen. Any trace of dirt, and the rep was in trouble.

True or not, the story highlights a vital lesson: when you hold yourself to higher standards, performance rises.

In this episode, I explore how applying a “white-glove standard” to your meetings, presentations, and events can make the difference between being forgettable and being trusted.

You’ll discover:
Why preparation is the hidden foundation of professionalism
How first impressions shape the room before you even start
The discipline needed to deliver with clarity and confidence
Why follow-up often decides whether opportunities move forward or stall

This isn’t about perfectionism — it’s about professionalism. And professionalism builds trust.

Listen now: Spotify link to Episode 2

Be ready when it matters most — and apply the white-glove test to your next big moment.

Why SME Business Owners Must Be Selective with Learning & Development Investment

All people are important, but with strategic initiatives some are more important than others. SME business owners must be selective when investing in people.

That statement can sound personal, but it isn’t. It’s a business truth. Strategy doesn’t succeed in theory—it succeeds through people. And at certain moments, some individuals play a disproportionately important role in turning strategic intent into reality.

Strategy Brings Hidden Talent to the Surface

When a new initiative is launched, something interesting often happens.

People who were previously under the radar step forward with energy, creativity, and commitment. Suddenly, they’re seen in a whole new light.

Others—perhaps those we always assumed would “step up”—fail to show the same enthusiasm or capability.

Moments like these can represent a quiet changing of the guard. For an SME business owner, they are strong indicators of who is ready to be backed with investment—whether that’s training, development, or additional strategic responsibility.

Why Selectivity Matters

Learning and development budgets are not unlimited, especially in smaller businesses. Spreading resources evenly may feel fair, but it isn’t always effective. Instead, SMEs need to invest in the individuals most likely to advance the strategy and deliver impact. This isn’t about playing favourites. It’s about recognising where development spend can make the biggest difference for the business as a whole.

Preparation When It Matters Most

At Hargreaves Marketing, we help SME business owners identify those pivotal people and provide the structured support they need. From clarifying the strategy to preparing the individuals who will make it happen, we ensure businesses are ready for the moments that matter most.

Launching the Hargreaves Marketing Podcast

I’m pleased to share that the first episode of the Hargreaves Marketing Podcast is now live. But rather than just say “out now,” I want to reflect on why I’ve started this series, and how it connects to what we do at Hargreaves Marketing.

Be Ready When It Matters Most

At Hargreaves Marketing, our focus is simple: helping driven sales, marketing and business professionals be ready when it matters most. That means:

Developing advanced business communication capabilities

Preparing for high-stakes meetings, presentations and events

Equipping professionals to solve problems, drive projects and win deals

The podcast will explore these themes in depth. Each episode is designed to offer fresh perspectives and practical insights to help SMEs and their people seize opportunities when they arise.

Making More of Opportunities

From a client’s perspective, the question is often not “Do we have opportunities?” but “Are we fully ready to make the most of them?”

Whether it’s a pitch, a client meeting, an industry event or an internal project presentation, the ability to communicate with clarity, confidence and purpose can make all the difference. This podcast aims to highlight those moments, and to encourage professionals and business owners alike to approach them with the right mindset and tools.

Why a Podcast?

On a personal note, I’ve always had a deep interest in business media. During my career, I worked for specialist media organisations and contributed extensively to in-house business magazines — back when most media was still print.

Now, I’m excited to be creating in the digital space: podcasts, videos, interview recordings and other formats that bring ideas to life in new ways. This isn’t just about producing content — it’s about providing practical, relevant support to business professionals who care about their careers, and SME leaders who want to invest wisely in developing their people.

Looking Ahead

The first episode looks at a common dilemma many SMEs face: the balance between accepting what is and striving for what could be. It’s a theme that sets the stage for the series to follow, where we’ll cover readiness, mindset, team development and commercial excellence.

You can listen to Episode 1 on Spotify here

This is just the beginning — and I look forward to sharing the journey with you.

“Is Your Business Talking to Your Market — or Just Adding to the Noise?” “Many companies could see a dramatic boost in productivity with clearer rules […]

“Is Your Business Talking to Your Market — or Just Adding to the Noise?”

“Many companies could see a dramatic boost in productivity with clearer rules for social media and a stronger market focus in their marketing content. Which raises a tough but necessary question: is your marketing content strategy, and your social media policy, fit for purpose?”

In the 1990s and early 2000s, business growth was built on direct conversations. Buyers and sellers spoke on the phone, discussed needs, and decided whether there was a fit. The exchange was clear, commercial, and focused on value.

Today, communication is noisier. On platforms like LinkedIn, it’s common to see businesses mixing political views, personal reflections, and trivial distractions alongside their professional messaging. The result? For potential customers, it’s hard to know what a company actually does, who it helps, and why it matters.

This creates two problems for SMEs:

Content confusion – your market can’t find clarity in your message.

Productivity drag – “professional social media” becomes a time sink that absorbs attention at every level of seniority.

The challenge is striking the right balance. Your market needs to hear from you — but what they need is focus, relevance, and insight into how you can help them solve problems or grow their own businesses.

The solution isn’t more content. It’s better content, grounded in your addressable market and supported by a social media policy that keeps your team on track.
