Working on the business

Working on the business focuses on high-level issues such as vision, strategy, product development and values. This contrasts with “working in the business” which refers to general problem solving on a day-to-day basis.

  • Working “in the business” is about leadership. Making informed decisions to lead and inspire people.
  • For example, as the management guru, Conor Neill once explained, “if you are visiting factories to solve problems, you are still in day-to-day ops. If you are visiting factories to celebrate great contributions from your people – this is leadership.”
  • As a leader, you are more able to make informed decisions and take the right actions when you have the right information to base your decisions on.
