2nd March 202540 Years in the Making: The Experience Behind Hargreaves Marketing
A Lifelong Passion for Business
Having the right experience can make a huge difference when it is applied well.
Hargreaves Marketing wasn’t built overnight—it has been over 40 years in the making. My journey in business has always been driven by curiosity. No matter what role I was in, I was always observing, questioning, and analysing the decisions shaping the companies and industries around me.
Over the years, I’ve seen major shifts in markets, industries, and business strategies—sometimes from the inside, sometimes from the outside, but always with a keen eye on what was driving change.
Learning from Industry Transformations
Each decade brought new challenges and opportunities, shaping my understanding of business strategy and the realities of market evolution.
The 1980s: The Transformation of BT
During this period, I witnessed one of the most significant shifts in UK business history—the transformation of BT following privatisation. The impact on competition, pricing, and service delivery was profound. Understanding these changes early gave me insights into how businesses adapt (or fail to adapt) to market forces.
The Late 1980s & 1990s: The Drinks Trade Revolution
Working with Thwaites and Marston’s, I experienced first-hand the shifts in the brewing and hospitality industries. The rise of big brands, the decline of traditional regional brewers, and the impact of changing consumer habits all shaped my perspective on market positioning and competition.
The 2000s: Digital Disruption in Publishing & Advertising
I was working in publishing and advertising when Google changed everything. Traditional advertising, once built around predictable and repeatable campaigns in directories and print media, faced a substitute product that reshaped how businesses reached their customers. Those who adapted thrived; those who clung to old methods struggled.
2008 & Beyond: The Financial Crash & the Digital Marketing Explosion
The 2008 crash wasn’t just an economic event—it coincided with the rise of digital marketing, social media, and data-driven decision-making. Suddenly, businesses had an overwhelming number of choices for reaching customers, but many lacked the strategy to navigate this new landscape effectively.
From Observer to Advisor: 12 Years as a Consultant & Coach
For the last 12 years, I’ve taken everything I’ve learned—from the boardrooms of corporate giants to the marketing struggles of small businesses—and used it to help business owners make sense of an ever-changing strategic environment.
At Hargreaves Marketing, we don’t just look at short-term tactics. We help businesses step back, understand the bigger picture, and make strategic decisions that drive sustainable growth.
